Self-Coaching: The Powerful Program to Beat Anxiety and Depression uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)as self-help. The basis for CBT is that our thoughts and interpretations of events influence our moods and can be positive or can contribute to depression and anxiety. By learning to control and redirect our thoughts and the interpretations we place on life events, we can turn down negative internal cues and dialogue, negative "self-talk", which can contribute to better moods and "curing" or at least abetting depression and anxiety. CBT is applied for many other mood and psychiatric disorders. When accompanied by changes in our behavior, lifestyle changes, then it can be a powerful way of overcoming mood disorders. This book and books like it can be used as a part of a self-help program. Note from AYCNP on CBT self-help: The causes of depression and sources of anxiety are many and varied. For certain individuals or certain types of depression, CBT self-help or self coaching can be an effective method of helping depression, anxiety, and other mental health or mood disorders. For some self-coaching might just be one small step among many towards better mental health. A realistic view of all treatments is necessary for recover. Diligence, hard work, a willingness to make changes and sacrifices are needed for some in order to recover from depression. No single book or certainly no pill is the complete answer to overcoming depression. However, every step in the right direction is a step towards recovery.
Getting Your Life Back: The Complete Guide to Recovery from Depression by Jesse Wright, Monica Ramirez Basco Ph.D.
Getting Your Life Back: The Complete Guide to Recovery from Depression uses a similar approach and is recommend by Library Journal but not fully by Publishers Weekly who feels that the tone is preachy and somewhat condescending (typical of many psychiatrists). The texts is based on addressing several areas of life and psyche: thinking, taking action, addressing biological issues, relationships, spirit of spirituality. Addressing these key areas of living is a good foundation for mental health self-help. Library Journal states that the exercises in this book are well-developed and helpful.

Music is a powerful force in mental health. Music can elevate our moods, change the chemical balance of our mind, or cause us to identify with powerful emotions of love or hate, peace or anger, joy or sadness. You do not necessarily need to see music identify with it, therefore, music is something we experience in our mind. Psychology and music are powerfully connected.
